If it is what I think it is, then it is a very rare cloud formation, particularly at the latitude of Sydney. I have now consulted the Bureau of Metereology and think it must be cloud known as 'Iridescent Cloud'. Unfortunately it is much less rare. The Bureau tell me that there was a truly spectacular display at around dawn - but I slept through it!
