Oh, by the way, the original discussion WAS about avatars and smilies.
Nurn: "...all the smilies and avatars have pretty much done it for me...the whole site has got too big".
That is what Angie was asking about.

This morning while the site was up and running, I found a note from Angie in my inbox telling me there was a discussion going on here.
I spent several minutes composing a carefully crafted three point response to what had already been posted, pointing out how much easier it was to read the page without all the graphic static and some other equally important observations. When I hit submit, the site had gone down again and all was lost. Brilliant logic and astute prose are hard enough to come by only to have it disappear like castles on the sea shore.

Jeb, it needs to be five-point, not three...
and with each point posted individually.

I'm doin' good to come up with a 3 point hitch and PTO. Besides, it all happened before breakfast and I can't remember what that was.

Jeb, a lot of people here will copy what they have written before they post. Especially if it is long and something they really need to say. That way if the gremlins steal it when you submit it, you can paste it and try again.

And in some cases, instead of copying it, they should try reading it.

I am aware of all that, but the excitement of having literarily outdone myself forced my enthusiasm to exceed my capabilities.

NEW RULES GAME:CRICKET.
Applicable for all the teams that visit/play Australia.
1. Ricky Ponting –(THE TRULY GENUINE CRICKETER OF THE CRICKET ERA AND WHOSE INTEGRITY SHOULD NOT BE DOUBTED) should be considered as the FOURTH UMPIRE. As per the new rules, FOURTH UMPIRE decision is final and will over ride any decisions taken by any other umpires. ON-FIELD umpires can seek the assistance of RICKY PONTING even if he is not on the field.
2. While AUSTRALIAN TEAM is bowling, If the ball flies anywhere close to the AUSTRALIAN FIELDER(WITHIN 5 metre distance), the batsman is to be considered OUT irrelevant of whether the catch was taken cleanly or grassed. Any decision for further clarification should be seeked from the FOURTH UMPIRE. This is made to ensure that the cricket is played with SPORTIVE SPIRIT by all the teams.
3.While BATTING,Each AUSTRALIAN batsman has to be out FOUR TIMES (minimum) before he can return to the pavilion. In case of THE CRICKETER WITH INTEGRITY, this can be higher.

Rena, you are assuming an environment wherein rational thought is within one's grasp. In a culture where driving in heavy traffic, talking on the phone, balancing a cup of coffee on your lap, resetting your GPS navigator and seeking a different radio station all at the same time are accepted as normal behavior, I have to admit to total failure. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can leave the house in the morning wearing matching socks.

4. All AUSTRALIAN players are eligible to keep commenting about all players on the field and the OPPONENT TEAM should never comment as they will be spoiling the spirit of the AUSTRALIAN team. Any comments made in any other language are to be considered as RACIALISM only.
5. MATCH REFEREE decisions will be taken purely on the AUSTRALIAN TEAM advices only. Player views from the other teams decisions will not be considered for hearing.

Appy, one of the rules of cricket should be that it only be discussed among those who know what the heck they are talking about unless the discussion also includes Buddy Holly.

There it goes..sigh relief. The match was a SHAME.I never claim that our boys do a great job always in the field, but this particular match was a real spoilsport, a literal murder of the game.Anyway, the team still awaits for signal from the BCCI, basing on which they will either continue or abandon the series. And if they continue, personally I feel, its not worth.Too many things involved and the main factor is money!.Lets see what happens.

From Texas A&M University: The 2007 winning entry from an annual contest calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term.
This year's term: Political Correctness.
"Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly romoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Oh, Appy, offending Someone is half the fun of any conversation. Seriously, it is kind of sad that one cannot speak freely these days without fear of retribution just because someone has a different opinion, a different definition for any word used, a fear of difference etc. If only "political correctness" had never come about! I do really appreciate Jeb's quoted definition of PC. Thanks for the laugh, Jeb.

Hello all, long time no post... Oh, dear, I seem to have started something... Of course I am not offended by smilies and avatars! Thanks to Ian and Greg, and anyone else who "defended" me.
Believe me, it takes a whole lot more than that to offend me...! Maybe I'm just an old conservative at heart (it pains me to say that, because it just can't be true!!).
I did like it better without all the fussiness, but the reason I was away for so long was major computer problems at home, and the fact that I now have teenagers, and can't get computer time the way I used to when they went to bed early.
Plus, okay, I am an old cynic, and kinda don't like all the cutesyness, but hey, whatever you're into yoursevlves....
Hope to post more in the future now I that I think I have it all worked out... but no avatars and smilies for me!

PS I don't mind avatars so much. They can be useful; but I have tried so many times to sign up here but could never manage it. Maybe someone else is using my name?
Smilies, however....!

OK, I'm back again (sorry, all!).
What I don't like about the smilies is that, to me, they make everything much more difficult to read, simply by cluttering things up. I liked it better when they were just the usual smilies, but now there are banners, cakes, and the kitchen sink, taking up several lines of text and just breaking everything up.
I get it that people like them. I'm really not trying to be nasty or judgemental about anyone - it's just a personal opinion.
Talk soon, I hope, given the opportunity here at home....!

Nurn, what serendipitous event led me here on the very day you happened to post with just those types of remarks? Long have I felt the very same about the current condition. I have made the occasional attempt, albeit cryptic and left handed, to stimulate a little of the old caustic exchange. The raconteurs of yesteryear have disappeared. Is there a rallying cry that could possibly re-assemble those wags and wits who made this site what it once was?

Howdy Jeb,
Though I've always liked the "community spirit" of this site, and understand that it means a lot to people here, I do have to say that I, like you(cynic that I am), did used to like the caustic remarks that used to get people going with a good old argument.
It's what life is about - folks agreeing and disagreeing; no? yes? (someone diagree....!!)

Well, to heck with you Nurn. Let's step outside and fight this out man to man (sorry, woman). I do love the friendly arguements we used to have on the site, but many of them got UNfriendly, and became personal attacks against people (even I got sucked into that scenario as well). I prefer arguing without spite, and some folks ruined it with their spite, hurting others in the process. Live and let live, but I don't believe you should use an Internet site to vent your anger on others, and that seemed to be what happened about a year or so back.

Well, to heck with you.....sounds like a spat between Radar O'riely and Hawkeye... and your Iowa naiveté. That's not how to get it started again children. The community spirit is still here. It has just changed its pants. It is more like Saturday morning hanging-out-the- laundry-gossip-across-the-fence with the neighbor lady.

One thing that I run in to quite often is a well aimed jape, snide remark, tongue in cheek curve ball or etc. being completly missed or misunderstood. Perhaps the aim needs be lowered. Who was it at the great big battle that said "Aim low boys, they're riding shetlands".
