MEMBERS SPECIAL FEATURES – HELP AND INFORMATION

Submitted By: Angie from Melb

With all the new updates that Gath provides us, some of us find it hard to keep up, or work out, how to use the new features. On this page, I hope that you will find your answers.

For those that want to know, please ask your questions here. For those in the know, please post your instructions here.

Gath Is allowing us to name or provide links for the site we use to create our special features, however, I must stress, that SPAM is not allowed and will not be tolerated. If you come across any of these, please report them to Gath immediately.

If you want to ask a question and have Gath answer it, it is best to start your own thread (ie - don't just post it here) so that he can clearly see it from the main forum page.

Hi Tree,

Hmm - a 'sent messages' folder - I hadn't thought of that.

There is a 3000 character limit (per message). The easiest way around it is to break the message into 2 smaller ones.

Thx for answers Gath & Angie. I was able to work round problem eventually. A new query..I have signed up as a Supporting Member and thought it handy to have the offline Sudoku game. I have it ok on my desktop as a Zip file and it seems to extract ok but the .exe file won't do its thing. I get an Application Error. Any thoughts? BTW the error is 0xc0000135

Gath, how did you put your pictures on your page without using flickr? It looks like you have four pictures in the area that would have been text. Thanks.

Hi Stella,

Go to 'update details', then down to the 'homepage text' section. Choose the little icon that looks like a tree. You can then add an image to your page. However, the image must already be on the internet (it cannot be on your computer). If you want to load your images onto the site, you can do it through the picture gallery (though this looks a little different, and I don't think this is what you want).

If you go into update details, on the top left hand side you should see Upload Pictures, click on that, it will bring up a new window. Instructions on how to upload these are all there. Good Luck, and I can't wait to see your latest photos.

RE; PERSONAL SMILIES
Just a quick note, in regard to personal smilies. Many members have contacted me, asking why they can't submit their own personal smilies. Todate, these smilies are only available to Supporting Members, so unfortunatly all Free members are not able to use them.
You may want to think about signing up as Supporting Member.
Have a great day everyone.

How can you downsize the new 16x16 puzzle to fit on one screen so that you don't have to scroll to work on it?

Hi,
How do you get pictures onto a gallery on my page. Some people have this and no Flickr access while I could only do it through Flickr. If you do it through Flickr all your photos are then available for viewing. Is there an option for this to be turned off?

Hey Sabina,
If you are talking about all the photo's in our Photo gallery, which are located just under the youtube. I posted instructions for Wagdy, just 5 posts up from this.
If you are concerned about others being able to access your flickr photo's, I can't help you there, I don't do flickr. I'm sure one of our other members may be able to help you out there.
I personally use Photobucket to store all my photo's and animations in. I then insert them in the text box using the little (tree) link. Hence why you don't get a link to my web photo album.
If you still are unsure, just buzz, and I'll see what I can find out for you.

Great question. I had to ask Gath, lol.
I'm sorry to tell you, but at this stage, you may only save your times if you are a Supporting Member.
Have you considered signing up as a Supporting Member?

Angie is correct - saving times is reserved for supporting members.

For those who want to save copies of their outgoing personal messages - as well as writing a message first then pasting it onto the form; you can alternatively do it the other way round - so just before you send the message you can copy its content into a word-file. You may not realise you want to have a copy until after it is written.

One problem I have is in editing my gallery item.
I have script as image files, and if I wish to improve the wording or lay-out (format), I have to replace them altogether. When I do that I lose members existing comments on the original items and start with a clean sheet again. That is a pity. I windered if it would be hard to be able to replace the images without losing the comments? Would this be open to abuse?

Hi Rayray,

Though it is not a bad idea to allow the update of photos/images in your gallery it is a lot of work & (I suspect) not a feature that would be used very often.

If there is a demand for the feature, then please post here or email me & I will take it into consideration for future updates.

Hi Angie,Glad to hear you continued your exercise regime whilst away.
Now to business, my photo gallery...why do the photos appear so large that you have to scroll across and down to look at them. Thought it might have been due to my ancient digital camera, most are under 500kb, but the two with bubs in them are not from my camera? Help would be appreciated.

Hi Broni - Thanks for the tip. I used my photo software to "make web ready" - something about reducing the number of pixils, which I guessed about and liked the size that came out. So I'm good to go now!

Angie, thanks so much for your email about this site. I can now access my page! I created an avatar however it is 8kb and needs to be less than 5kb. How do I do this? I used shrinkpictures.com. When I can do this bit right, I shall try to put some of my own images on my page and even submit some! Many thanks

Hi Elizabeth,

At the moment you cannot directly link to your photos on Picasa. When I coded the Flickr option Picasa wasn't that popular. How many people are using Picasa? If many sudoku.com.au users have their pics there, then I'll see if I can add Picasa support.

SUPPORTING MEMBERS PERSONAL SMILIES:

You can only have your own individual smilies if you are a Supporting Member.

To Create Your Smilies they must be:
File size must be under 3kb
The image must be in .JPG
The image must be between 10-100 pixels wide and 10-100
Re sizing your image can be done a number of ways, you can either do them in Paint (as per my instructions on page 1) or use the shrink site that we use for avatars: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/ just remember when putting in the size you want it must be under 100 for it to be accepted here on site. Play around with the sizing and only download what you are happy with. It’s a bit of a guessing game, but once you have done it a few times, you will soon get the hang of it.
Once you have found your smilie and have it to the correct size, you simply go to update details on your page, go to the section allocated for Smilies and Click on Submit Smilies
Simply following the instructions Gath has in there, and then just sit back and await his approval.
To use your personal smilies on site, you will notice that above the comments box there will now be two blue headings, smilies and your smilies. Simply just click on your smilies and there they are.

Hope this helps you all if you need any more info, just let me know.

St. Angie -
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this page! I am a tech troglodyte and have been dorking about with my images to attempt to make a proper avatar - and that "shrinkpictures" website worked so easily! We'll see if the image makes it satisfactorily all the way to my messages!

Hey Angie - HELP!!!
Techno-Idiot here. I was so proud, went and reduced size (numbers of kbs) and dimensions of my photos in my gallery, and looked at them this a.m. - some are still huge! What am I doing wrong? The image says 3 x 2 inches, for example, but appears way too big in my gallery. I feel so stupid! Should I use web/e-mail if I have that option in Photoshop? Also, if I reduce an extant photo - can I substitute it or must I delete the old one (which takes away all comments) and start new?
Another question: can one set up an address book of sorts on one's page? Also, I don't know what "Friends" mean on the top right of the page.

Thanks for any help you can send my way - I've learned a lot with this website, but it often seems I've missed a salient point!

Oh. I saw spotted Broni's question and answer from March, and Peg's discussion as well.

The "Duh factor" seems to be in fine form today - hope my day improves as it goes along! This is getting embarrassing - my avatar is marching along on this page, a testimony to my ineptitude!
