Someone is selling Sudoku t-shirts at the following site: http://www.phillynewsstand.com/Sudokook-Sudoku-tees-at-Phillynewsstand-com-p/pnssd05.htm

What really tees me off is they call themselves "sudokooks", and that's what I named my sudoku cookbook. Rats!! I'll have to come up with another name.

It just doesn't have a good ring to me....we really don't need to use that particular term...we can be very specific with the Sudoku.com au addy. However we would need Gath's acceptance of that usage. Perhaps one of the other terms would be less restrictive, but could apply to any sudoku site....thoughts to ponder.

ok - so you think sudokuhood would have a negative conotation. Are Knighthood, brotherhood, sisterhood or priesthood negative? We all live in a neighborhood. Generally, the term describes a commonality of the people - where they live, occupation, etc. Being a member of the Sudokuhood would mean that we share a common bond of Sudoku. Plus I could not find it on google.

We have a lot of organizatios called friends of _____. Sudokufiends would be Sudoku Friends without the "r" - which would make us Sudoku Fiends. Any other suggestions.

Could you please explain why we can't use Sudokuland? I must have missed that somewhere. I don't like Sudokuhood. I agree with Mamacita that it would seem to refer to a gang of hoodlums rather than a neighborhood. As far as designs, the one I like best is Angie's with the "bringing the world together" line & the pretty aqua blue color!

Sorry, I posted on page 3 before I read the comments on page 2! I prefer a flat map to either the sinusoidal or butterfly, & I like the square map in the middle of the sudoku square with AUSTRALIA in the center of everything! After all Oz is where the site originates, posting times are based, is home of the creator (Gath, not God!!), etc., etc. I would like to advertise this site to other people who might only be doing sudoku in books & newspapers. After all that Gath does for us, the least we could do for him is a little advertising! Has anybody talked (or written?) to him about this yet??

Only been checking out this site for just over 2 mths so perhaps I don't fully understand the friendships that have developed here.
But I have just had a quick read through some of the comments. Perhaps there is a market here for Gath (could even look at caps, stubby holders, key rings, or others marketing items) & take orders up front from interested persons (naturally postage would have to be calculated into his costs).
With all the hiccups that have been happening on site lately, time might be too scarce for him at the moment, but down the track it could become another string to his bow.

Maureen - I think that is an excellent idea. I mentioned something similar awhile back (unfortunately it was on "easy" and I don't remember what day), but it seems it didn't get too good a reception! Did you check out the websites I mentioned above? There are a lot of nifty ideas, and I do think it would make things a whole lot simpler to have Gath run the show - but obviously only if he has the time and inclination!!!

Hi Jane.
Haven't had time to check out websites yet. Will try to do over weekend. Leaving now to help hubby out for a few hours at the business we own.
Isn't there someone from Oz who sells on e-bay, that could organize something with Gath?

Jane - I checked out the websites - the first has the most variety of items. I do think that the designs presented here are a better expression of the site.

If we all want to order some (each his own) Sudoku T-shirt and wear them in photos for sharing or to "meet-ups", etc., it may be easier. However, I would like to at least see us complete a design for a shirt & see where it goes from there. To each his own is always an option.

PS: Clarifying above: The designs we have come up with so far (with or without Sudoku.com.au OR term Sudokuland) are a better expression of THIS site.

I've collected from various postings (when a 2 designs selected, each was given 1/2 a votes)
the following:

Square (2): Kathy/Fl, Julie/IL
Flat (Transparent)(1 1/2): Geo/so Cal, Elsie/ Strath (1/2)
Diamond/Oval (expanded globe) (2 1/2): Rayray, Dorothy/SF, Kate/Sydney (1/2)
Butterfly (1): Elsie/Strath (1/2), Kate/Sydney (1/2)

If anyone wants to change of correct the above accounting - let me know.

As you can see with only 7 people voting thus far, we do not have an overwhelming leader. Now is the time for you who are interested to speak up. I guess this is a caucus - rather than an a secret ballot.

Remember you are voting on only the depiction of the world map - to be on the Sudoku board:

Square Map - Center Square of Sudoku Board
Flat (Transparent) Map - Across center of Board
Diamond/Oval (expanded globe) - presentation can be tilted or straight
Butterfly Map

For views of all 4 of these map styles see my page.

Eve - If I am registered as an Independant, can I still vote in the caucus??
I like the third one on your site with the open world and words "You've got my number" However, my vote would be to replace "you've got my number" with "Bringing the world together"

Wow! Good job(s)! I have designed several T-shirts and these are very nice entries.
There seems to be lots to consider. I agree, "Simple is Best".
I can't figure out who designed which design to vote. (I guess I've been to too many sites to remember!)

Are we voting now or do we still have room for input?

I like:
(1) The map spread across the center grids (maybe tilted slightly up to favor lower globe, if needed?) Or a star * on Australia?
(2) "Bringing the World Together" on the bottom of the puzzle ...which describes what is meaningful about our particular site.
(3) "Good Maen, everyone!" at the top of puzzle or on the top grids if we can't use "Sudokuland"
(That really IS our phrase, after all!)
(4) How about "Sudokuville" if -land & -hood have objections? As ...in we are a like a village. (I haven't Googled that, though.)
(4) The website address across bottom grids.

Shelia, you put a lot of thought into your response. As I suggested to Eve in a message to her, I think it is important to first of all find out if Gath will allow the promotion of his site by our using the Sudoku.com.au address. I also believe a questionnaire would be useful, to address the various designs so that people can be polled for things like do you want a world map on the shirt, do you want a flat or round world map, do you want a 9x9 Sudoku board on the shirt, do you want MAEN on the shirt (good conversation starter probably as people might ask what it means), etc., etc., etc. Does anyone have the time to put together such a questionnaire, and has anyone approached Gath for his thoughts or consent to use his website address? I don't, but if someone volunteered, whoo hoo!

GC...Good point re contacting Gath, not only for his permission, but for his savvy business acumen ....and even his willingness or inability in taking part in the venture.
As far as the questionaire...I'm not able to tackle it in a timely manner, but agree it would be a good idea.
My current teeshirt vote would be for the flat map across the board.

I still think Gath should be consulted, and if he wants to offer t-shirts and other Sudoku paraphernalia, that would be great. He might even want to do this professionally with a real graphic artist and everything!!!!

Jane...I agree whole heartedly with your statement about consulting Gath and perhaps getting at the least, some direction, if not his involvement.

I have sent the following email to Gath:
Hi Gath,
For several weeks now there has been an ongoing conversation related to designing a logo for a T-shirt that site members and others might wear. Several designs have been submitted by various people, but many of these designs include your website address - Sudoku.com.au. Would you allow for your address to be included in a design, and would you be interested in supporting such an endeavor, as a marketing initiative for your enterprises?
There is a forum page dedicated to this subject, and many people have expressed an interest in a Sudoku T-shirt, but many also feel the shirt should be designed (regardless of final design) to include your Website address. Your input on the Forum page would be welcome.
Thanks in advance, and cheers! ....Greg

Hi Everyone,

Greg just told me about this thread so I wanted to check it out. I haven't read all the comments (but I've looked at most of the pics) and the ideas are great.

*Easily* the best is the pic of Kym & I .

I'll have more time to post tomorrow.

Eve - My vote is for the flat transparent map over a 9X9 board with "Bringing the world together" on it, but it also should have Sudoku.com.au, Sudokuland and MAEN somewhere on it.
As a fairly new member, I was really impressed with that terms "Sudokuland" and "MAEN" when I first started posting on this site.

I like Angie's shirts with the tilted sudoku puzzles.
However they are all great designs.

The design could probably be downloaded and "professionally" printed by a photogaphy shop who prints photos onto T shirts or there is special "paper" that you can print on your own computer and iron onto a T shirt yourself.
Unless, of course Gath wants to expand his business into selling T shirts?

Sorry, I meant to also say that the message above was Gath's initial response to my email. I'm sure he'll have more to say when he has time, but the use of the site address on any final shirt designed is okay.

For what it's worth (and if the project is still alive), here are some more alternatives to "Sudokuland" if it is decided we can't use it: SudokuClan, SudokuRealm, Land O' Sudoku, SudokuNation, SudokuKingdom, Sudokingdom, Republic of Sudoku, Sudokucountry, Sudokuzzins, SudokuTribe, Sudokufamily, SudokuKin, Sudokusiblings, SudokuSibs, SudokuKids, SudoKids.
