OH Vici, I wish you the beginners luck I had, my first compost pile was the fastest working hottest one I ever had! I made " dirt" in 6 weeks, and that is about the minimum you can do it in. Would you believe there was a compost board on AOL back then? where I learned all I know about composting. they have a saying, compost happens, all we composters can do is try to make it happen faster hehehe.

Congrats Queen Tricia!
...didn't realize we were anywhere near a TOPP.
I'm afraid my first pile is still not what I want it to be, but I just learned about keeping it moist. So I'll need to work it a bit more.
You composters are a real hoot!

Suzy - your "girl" sounds like something out of "Sling Blade" - sending her my blessings cos it sounds like she needs them. Or maybe not - as she is probably happy just the way she is, no?
Queen T - I'm doing a loud pinkish/coral color in the master bath. The marble we're using is beige and taupes with a slight streaking (occassionally) of this kind of light cranberry. So I got as close to it as I could in the paint. I'm excited about it as the floors, sink top, jacuzzi bath top, and shower will all be in the marble. I'm doing 2 walls around the windows (that are over the master bath) in that pink/coral. Will do that one on Monday.

Vici, composting is one time where size really matters! Ideally, a pile should be about one cubic yard, or a pile that is 3x3x3 feet. If you just have a pile of matter on the ground, it would need to be WAY bigger than 3x3 at ground level cause it gets so much smaller as it goes up. Yep, it needs to be moistened and turned too, about every 3 days. if you have really low humidity, covering top of pile with something helps. But you probably already know that.

VICI, I would barely open my eyes in that bath, and pretend it was a wonderful sunrise, say a mental ohhhh and ahhhhh, and go back to bed hehehe.

MizT, there was a compost area in our yard when we moved in, about the sizes you mentioned. An ad hoc thing built with left over bits of wood and tin. We tried to use it but quickly discovered that mowing out lawn filled it in one go! The processed clippings we will get from the girl will take up far less space...

No - I didn't know about covering it, and we do have low humidity. I will try that, thanks. I have a pile and a composter thing-a-maggie. It's black plastic with holes and is about 3' wide X 4' tall. The pile I have on it's own is pretty big, but way too dry. I'll need to remedy that - just been so busy painting. After Mike gets his surgery next week I'll be able to tend to them.

I wonder if I still have a copy of Composting 101 on the hard drive. The regulars on that board, and I quickly became one back about 12 years ago, kept a copy handy and when new people came on, asking good logical questions we had answered about 100 times before, first one to read the questions would post 101 again, it saved a LOT of typing. One of the master gardeners and long time " dirt gardener" put it together fu-or us and we added to it over time, lots of good info.
any old thing will do to cover it Vici. I had a piece of an old tarp with holes in it at one time.
Suzy, just grass clippings alone will take a long time to compost and begin to smell also, as that is all " green" or high nitrogenmaterial. You need a mixture of brown, or carbon based materials, (and all of them are not brown) with a measured amount of " green" or high nitrogen material (and all of those are not green). One example, brown in color coffee grounds or tea leaves are green materials.
Clear as mud yet???

I have tabs on AOL, so it is not a huge priority, except AOL is not working too well now. I will wait till he upgrades my puter, and give him a long list of things I want, and tell him to pretend I am a customer. Might get what i want then, ya think?

They probably look different with different systems Heidi, but they are the things you use to have more than one page open at at time - though you can do that more than one way.. umm... they go along the top of the page ... ummm... guess I'm computer illiterate too cause I can't explain it!

OR they go along the bottom of the page, little boxes that are clickable links to get you back to another page you have opened, but minimized, not showing. You can work on one website page, like reading the SA6 pages, and open the EASY page in another tab and work the sudolu puzzle or jigsaw there while waiting for some new posts on SA6. Something like that.

I have them on both the top and bottom of my page, and usually have some of each open, but think of the top ones as tabs (I get a little message 'open a new tab' when I hold my mouse over them) and the bottom ones as pages - cause on my system they seem to be another opening of the same program - at least when I'm using stuff other than the internet! See, I know teensy bits, but illiterate about the big stuff!

Even that went over my head. I think I do well using one page at a time. Anything more would be distracting.
Well, out to do the feeding.
The pies LOOK all right, and smell wonderful. I just hope they taste OK.
