I wrote my intro paragraph some time ago, after reading a story in the newspaper about a local woman who was capturing and spaying feral felines, and finding homes for the ones which were not too wild to be kept in a home. In my work in a nature center, just today I spoke to guests about the terrible damage that feral dogs and cats do in ecosystems which developed without them, such as offshore islands, where cats (and rats) destroy bird nesting colonies. You are right, the wording of my intro paragraph implies I want to keep feral pets in the wild, which is not the case. I will change it!

Dear Lynda,
I am sorry I broke off abruptly our last night time, but it was late and I was very tired after a hard day. We have a garden pond with carp (koi) and in the Winter when it is cold, being cold-blooded, they grind to a halt in a kind of hibernation. The weather is sub-zero sometimes in Winter, and water may then freeze in pipes, ponds etc. In ponds a layer of ice forms on the surface as ice, from surface water at less than 4 degrees C, which is less dense that median-temperature water. the ice layer will insulate further loss of heat from the pond so it does not not freeze solid, and the fish can survive in their sleep. Pond equipment, as do water water pipes, is subject to frost damage, because when the ice expands on freezing it splits rigid pipes open and, after the thaw, that can cause a flood.
Sorry if it sound like a lesson - I must be pedantic from past teaching. We drain any outside pipes and lag those exposed within the house to undue cold. The carp are well-looked after, but as they grow too big for the pond, occasionally we release large ones into the lake in the nearby park. If they are too crowded they can become cannibalistic with big-eating-small - even when they are adequately nourished. They are also prone to fungal disease with overcrowding.

In Memory of Lynda:

You were always thinking of others, even when others should have been thinking of you. I feel honored to have known you, and I shall really miss our conversations. I shall miss seeing your Blue Wren avatar or your horse and foal on the Sudoku pages. Now that lovely photo of the fire rainbow shall always be connected to you im my mind.

Even though we do not have a blue wren here in the USA, we have a blue bunting, as brightly colored as your wren, and they nest in my back yard. I shall think of you when I see our lovely blue bunting, or a horse in pasture, or a rainbow.

Lynda, I shall miss you and I light a candle in your memory.

Our thoughts are with your family at this very sad time. I didn't know Lynda for very long but enjoyed our conversations. She will be sadly missed
