Just watched Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, and it is a hoot. The gore is gorey enough that I automatically turned my head each time our protagonist/villian raises his arm in a montage of serial murder, but it is a romp and a half, with Depp and Bonham-Carter both surprising singing 90% of their lines. Rolling Stone summed it up beautifully: "This Sweeney is a bloody wonder, intimate and epic, horrific and heart-rending as it flies on the wings of Sondheim's most thunderously exciting score." 3 and 1/2 out of 4 stars.

BONUS: Alan Rickman as nave and sexual abuser singing. The boy has chops.

saw the Counterfeiters. What do you say about a film about concentration camps? It is a true story about "Sally" and his expertise in producing counterfeit pounds/dollars for the Nazi effort...harrowing at times but I found it didn't get to me as much as the Lives of others and i'm not sure why...a friend saw it independently from me and said the same thing. Still, it's a movie worth seeing.

Will be seeing IJ on wed so I've been told - hope i enjoy it as much as you did Rolanda...but I seem to be less and less impressed with the likes of Pir of the carrib ( see, I can't even be bothered writing out the title)etc...

So Billy...IJ not worth a mention? a gush? an artfully raised eyebrow? (your ability to convey this in text is beyond me). I've been trying to see Un Secret for a while...have to buck up before I miss it....

Ok Mary...had actually forgotten to come back to IJ...does that indicate something? It was Okay. Pure escapism, leave your brain by the foyer stuff...and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as i'm not paying for it, which i wasn't so it was okay, ok?
Off to see The orphanage so I can scare myself silly at 11am and not look for dark shadows at home during the day, I'll have a few hours before darkness descends...

El Orfanato - ...I did jump a few times, inspected the toe of my boot now and then, becky and i made eye contact when necessary, and i stuck my fingers in my ears when it all got a bit too much for my nerves...good thriller/horror flick, good storyline, and for some reason being subtitled made it seem more credible...but it's only a movie.

oh yes, saw the shorts for Mongol - re Genghis, and although it looked good I was totally distracted by the voice-over voice, so much so that bec and i were falling about laughing when really we should have been very serious because he was a rather famous person.

Back from 2 weeks in Israel, seeing kids, the country, including Ramallah. Whole new perspective on Israel, Palestine, and foreign television.

Should have said "the West Bank" but there's a long story behind that Freudian slip.

Hey Terry, back...I missed your incisive comments. We spent 6 months in Israel BC...loved the country, the people. There is nothing like a visit to learn about the problems faced in other areas of the world...relying on the media does not work. We left just after Operation Peace for Gallilee (the {first?}Lebanese invasion)began.Long time ago.....

hey Terry and Mary, how you been ladies?
Who who what Terry? I was talking about genghis Kahn/khan? who we should've being showing a lttle bit more respect for...but weren't. PLUS I do like a well-behaved audience, and i would've tut-tutted at me if i was someone else.
"whole new perspective on...foreign Tv"? - is that code for "real news"? Instead of Murdochised news?
btw - I am feeling very clever today as i sat an exam and I only needed to use one pen out of the four I had, and I think I passed as i'm pretty sure i spelled my name right - good hey?

Thanks for the review, Rolanda. Can't wait to see it. Met Karen Allen in her shop in the Berkshires after Ford committed, but before she knew her character was to be reprised. Then 17-y-o son thrilled to meet her and she couldn't have been more gracious. When he realized she'd been in Animal House he was over the moon.

Just saw The Waiting Room with Anne-Marie Duff and Rolf Little. Set up none too original, but very nice characters. It followed my personal rule that you don't leave someone for someone but, rather, for yourself, so of course I liked it. Three and a half stars.

Let's see. Saw "$ex and the City" last week. I thought it was a very good flick, but I have seen the entire series. I've heard from others that it was just "ok" to those that haven't seen much of the series. It was great to see so many of the original cast members, but was saddened when Aiden wasn't included. It was worth the money to see it in the theater.

And tonight I took the kids to see "Kung Fu Panda". Eeh. It was okay. Very cute for a kid's flick, but had some scenes that even scared me a bit. Not a Jack Black fan, but I didn't have to deal with his lack of acting ability, only his voice, so it was tolerable. It was worth it for the kiddos, but I would have preferred to rent it. I have no doubt that "Everyone was Kung Fu fighting" song will be stuck in my head for days, and I will be breaking up many re-enactments from my boys.

Why is it when JD's name is mentioned I get a strange sensation pointing me to here...

I'm off to see Sex and the City next week... can't wait. I watched the whole series, wonderful I hope the film doesn't disappoint.

Films I saw on the plane (long journey 7 1/2 hrs) recently.
No Country For Old Men, I thought that this was just gratuitous violence, no real storyline other than how do I kill again and again. Tommy Lee Jones hardly had a part to play really. Perhaps it was just me...

Things We Lost in the Fire, Gosh I think I've fallen for him - Benicio Del Toro as Jerry just wonderful... he must be added to the list girls. The film on the whole was a likeable, feel good film but not grabbing my attention too much. Halle Berry was a little subdued but Micah Berry as her son was adorable.

The Bucket List, wonderful, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman sparred perfectly, great humour and a rather sad ending (I shed a tear into my napkin, I didn't have a tissue sadly). I think we should all have a bucket list...

Sweeney Todd, well it was JD after all so I have to give it a reasonable score. Helena Bonham Carter was excellent in it and JD could raise a decent enough tune but somehow it didn't do it for me this time but on the whole I'm glad I watched it.

On Wednesday, Bean and I went to see 'Then She Found Me', starring Helen Hunt. This was also her first foray as a director and I believe she did a good job. Colin Firth plays an EXTREMELY likable character to Hunt's slightly sad one (if anything more could go wrong for her, it would have!) Bette Midler was perfect in her role as the 'birth' mother and all in all, I found it an enjoyable way to pass the morning. A chick flick par excellence, and yes, I did have a little cry, even though I can cry at the opening of a tissue box!
