Hi evryone xox An interesting observation of the linked ads. As a supporting member I do not see the ads, so I wonder who gets my link when I mention bottled water or hybrid cars.

More innovations...even having prohibited cookies, when I type ''I'' in the 'name' block, it automatically fills in ''Ian.'' I'm getting more nervous all the time.

Ian, I wouldn't worry too much about that yet. Only when it starts questioning your motives, giving alternative ideas for input, or starts making disparaging remarks about your living room decor would I jump out of the window and take up housekeeping in a hedgerow.

Ian, Web publishers can use special field names to AutoFill on their pages. These tags are defined in the ECML (Electronic Commerce Modeling Language), not sure that typing 'I' and it autofilling 'Ian' is too much to worry about. BTW, I am interested to know why moving to Idaho may be a good idea ..... Is there something we Aussies should know about Idaho?

I don't get any particular ads. The most prevalent seems to be the high school reunion ad for me. As far as typing a letter and the rest popping up, that depends on your computer and the site you are on. On my old computer, I don't get any prompts. This is annoying because I have to type everything in. On the new laptop, when I type a letter it prompts me with the last word I used for that site or program. This happens with Word or Mapquest or here. It's to make it easier and I assume it has something to do with Microsoft. (or Apple) It's to make things easier, epecially when using such devices as a Blackberry. Ian, I don't think you need to move to Idaho and hide in a cabin. Computer tracking maybe sophisticated, but I think in general, we're ok.

This is interesting. When I come to this page without logging on I get the high school reunion ads. When I log in, I get ads for products for younger looking skin and finacial advisement. Mmmm, maybe 'they' do know me too well? I think I'll hold off on moving to Idaho until they start telling me I need a pedicure.

How's this for synchronicity? I too was a little bemused by the reference to Idaho (potatoes?)but just today I came upon a passage in my reading that gave it a similar rep. to Montana. The things we learn!

Many years ago while in the Navy, I operated and maintained a particularly sensative piece of equipment. During one deployment which placed the ship in harm's way, that piece of equipment was strung with primacord in case it had to be destroyed to maintain its classified status. I'm wondering if the time has come to do the same with this computer.

....through the understated, measured drawl emanating from the text above hides a jawline that is spasmodically flexing its twisted muscle; enamel from the grinding of teeth are being spat out like shards of glass, the left eye twitches involuntarily, bleeding palms as fingernails dig deep gouges, nostrils flaring as if preparing to hang-glide of everest's peak; the vein pulsing at the temple is as big as Arnie's femoral muscle when he won Mr Universe...btw jebbles - your opening sentence was highly ambiguous...

Ok exam question....
'Analyse and comment on any FOUR poems from your set text using any theoretical approach or approaches you wish. In selecting your poems, remember to choose ONE poem from each of the following categories: Renaissance; Metaphysical; Romantic; Modern OR Postmodern.'
I have since heard that a few students chose both Modern AND Postmodern. I read the question that it was a CHOICE. Is the wording ambiguous? I did not think so....

Billy, I think you are right. You had to choose one poem from Renaissance, one poem from Metaphysical, one poem from Romantic and one poem from either Modern or Postmodern, 4 total. It is not ambiguous to me. People must have read it wrong in their hast.

Why not just analyze an ambiguous poem and be done with it, or do I dare re-enter the fray after the thrashing received from my last post? Talk about ambiguous!

jeb - twas no thrashing (unless you enjoyed it - then it was)...I was merely empathising with your frustrations with your computer...unless I 'read' it wrong...
Thanks Stella, it'll be interesting to see if they get penalised for it, or if they kick up a stink and the profs agree that it was a badly worded question. Personally, I had to stop myself from woooooooohoooooooing, very hard to fail an exam with the text book and annotated notes allowed - 'dumbing down'? - yep.

So Mary - do you think it was a 'trick' question? To see if students can actually comprehend what is being asked of them? With the extensive use of spellcheck, I'm not sure if kids know the diff btween commas, semi-colons etc...I think a severe thrashing is in order too. I will be extremely miffed if they are dealt with leniently.

Punctuation forgotten, they can't count. To treat modern and postmodern as separate entities, that would give 5 catagories, not the mentioned 4. Not quite a trick question or even badly worded, just one that needed to be read carefully.

No trick question, just an example of what is bleedin' obvious to those of us with a 'proper' education, but difficult for those with a 'modern' one.

FOUR poems, last one - Modern OR Postmodern (meaning, choose one)
Seems clear to me. What would really p*ss me off..if they got extra credit for doing both!!

Kathy - the students have a right to appeal, if enough of them complain that the question was misleading, then the powers that be will have to look into it...I have asked a Guild representative to keep an ear out for a student revolt with regards to this matter! If I could have avoided writing an essay on a metaphysical poet/poem - I would have...

Stupidity Anecdote...
Just some Chuckle,if smart enuf can pick up some thread from this for a debate!
'Back in the 1980s, Yosemite National Park was having a serious problem with bears: They would wander into campgrounds and break into the garbage bins. This put both bears and people at risk. So the Park Service started installing armored garbage cans that were tricky to open - you had to swing a latch, align two bits of handle, that sort of thing. But it turns out it's actually quite tricky to get the design of these cans just right. Make it too complex and people can't get them open to put away their garbage in the first place. Said one park ranger, 'There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists.'

Billy, as no-one else has mentioned it = the capital letters kind of give some clues away too in that exam question! And the fact that they can't count to four -- they need to be penalised!

appy, More than likely, the tourists just didn't want to be bothered to take the time to open them. Whereas bears would probably sit there as long as it took to figure it out! Score one for the bears!

Humans - 0

Billy, you should make sure the other students didn't get away with doing the easier essay instead of the more difficult one. You would hate to be the one who is penalized for following the directions correctly!
