Maybe we should start another advertisement campaign.
BEING WRINKLED IS BEING GREEN!
We forego ironing for our country, for our planet, for our grandchildren.

You're probably right MizT, but since I moved I have the tiniest of tiny dryers and it takes hours to put stuff in for 5 minutes a bunch...

I read an article on the weekend claiming that reading leads to growth in the areas of the brain enabling empathy, imagination, compassion and insight. The worry is that engaging with a computer screen may not affect those areas as much and lead to a new generation with less of those characteristics...

Should we mention for our pocket book? Save the cost of electricity? Or does that sound a bit self centered? Maybe the planet thought is more nobel.

Actually MizT, sadly we would probably reach more people if we focused on the pocket book more than the planet. But then it would become a sign of wealth to wear unwrinkled clothes...
Mary, how would be check if the computer has less affect? Can we design an experiment?

OK, what other STUFF can we give up to save the planet? now, the dishwasher uses less water and energy to heat that water, than washing by hand. So we can still run those, in fact we SHOULD. Just be sure they are full ( do not run them so often and have to empty them so many times, FULL ladies, full!) and run them over night, at off peak hours. My if we put our heads together, we could save all kinds of energy , ours and the planets both.

I think the dishwasher one depends on how you wash dishes. I know several people who wash dishes under running water, which would definitely be less efficient, and people who rinse under running water before putting dishes in the dishwasher, which is probably the least efficient. A good old basin of water is probably the most efficient, if not the most hygienic.

I guess that is where my wonderful empathy, imagination, compassion and insight come fron, then, I still read books!
Mary, would it matter what one reads on the internet? and who wrote it? Was it fluff and the stuff of the e-zines, where there are 124 words per article and on to the next one? Or IM's (OOOPS, talking about us right here, right now) would it be indepth articles one can find, and research reports . . . well, you get the drift.

Having said that, if I had a dishwasher I would definitely use it!! I would just rinse in a basin of water first instead of under running water, and do the full thing too.

Heavy sigh. It's time. I must address the tornado damage... I also have to get dinner pre-cooked as I will be tutoring until after 6 and don't want to wait until 7 to eat...
It's been great chatting...

Well, at my house, I run dishwasher every other day. now if I had to wash up after each meal, it would be 6 basins of dishwater and 6 basins of rinse water. AND you do waste some water letting the water get hot, unless you are super thrifty and turn on the hot water and let it fill the rinse while the hot gets to the sink.
I just know i read, somewhere, it takes total energy to run the dishwasher. maybe it was research by the makers of dishwahsers??
Now in a pinch, I can wash dishes with only one small basin of water, A nice sopay sponge, wash, and then rinse in the basin. sort of like the Japaneese baths, you get sponged down to remove the dirt fore you go into the hot soaky tubs hehe

Gee I did not think anyone was about and did not check so missed most of the chatting. Had not done any ironing either. I do procrastinate about that. Why I always have a big pile waiting.
If we walked more and not hoped in the car would be a good way of saving the planet.

Dropped back while taking a break and letting the floor dry. Should have thought ahead and made myself a cup of coffee before washing it!
I haven't touched my ironing, but have done other stuff. Not enough yet! But the tornado damage is largely undone, it's just the cleaning underneath that's only half done....

I would walk if I didn't live so far from everywhere!! It's about 5 km to town, or 3 miles, which would be fine if I didn't have to carry groceries, or if I wasn't always in a rush to get where I'm going... I do try to combine trips though = if I'm going to take d1 to gym, I'll do shopping while I'm there etc.

Although I think I could cut back even more on my electricity use, and I don't have an offpeak hot water serice, my electricity bill is usually at least $100 less than my friends'. I don't know what I do differently....
(p.s. we are billed by the quarter here)

June, brain death here, I read your comment as 'pie' not 'pile'. Sat there for a moment wondering what the connection was before I re-read and blushed! I have a special place for my pile!!
I don't iron as much stuff as my mother does, I figure the kids will crease it all up when they drop it on the floor anyway.

Suzy, I use the car far too much. My back problem means I am walking very little these days .
I did get some ironing done and 'shaved' some of the knit fabrics that were getting pilled.
Also watched the DVD "Notebook" which I had seen at the movies so

MizT, I think the dishwasher companies compare energy use to the worst case hand washers - those people who don't use basins but let the water run the whole time they are washing. I cringe when I see people do it as there are parts of Oz where people are on water restrictions so tight they can barely fit in a shower!
Okay, I'll shut up and go clean some more now...
