Great to hear from you, Shiela! All three boys are fine, with Holmes amazing us at age eighteen. We'll be thrilled if he can enjoy another Christmas with us. Arthur and Spike are also fine, though we had nearly a year of spraying from Spike who got miffed when we went to New Zealand and had a malodourous way of letting us know! All fine now, we hope, though it was frustrating for many months. How are things in your neck of the woods? Any travels planned? Take care and keep in touch!

Thanks for the birthday wishes Shiela. I still don't know what I'm getting - the children are still asleep at 9:05am, what's the world coming to? I think I may have to wake them up soon if they don't do so of their own accord!

Awww shucks, thank you! I'll tell my Brandon that a dear friend in Michigan wished him a happy birthday! He's beginning to realize the concept of states. So far he knows about California, North Carolina, Illinois, and Arizona, states he has lived in or visited.

Thank you for asking and caring! I think I just had a little cold because I don't suffer the sinus congestion today!!! Felt good enough to go for a run and boy did that feel wonderful! Seems I feel a little anxious when I don't keep up my regular schedule for running. I guess I'm addicted to the endorphins!

Shiela, just dropping by to let you know that our little Holmes is in his final hours/days. He stopped eating yesterday and is only taking small laps of water. I'm praying he'll go peacefully during a nap. I've got him covered up on a soft, low bed and he's awake and alert but facing into the corner. I go in every fifteen minutes or so, give him a stroke and kiss and tell him I love him. He's on the same bed he slept on when he came to us eighteen years ago ... we've known this time would come, but is anyone ever ready? Keep us in your thoughts--we're so very heartbroken.

Hi, Shiela, and yes, our boy has gone home. Still a little teary so many days later, but every Valentine's Day we'll be able to drink a toast to our lovable guy. We've looked through the photo albums and shared stories; yesterday a lit a candle at church. Some people will think we're crazy, but every little ritual seems to help. I also wrote a tribute to him to tuck into his medical folder. Thanks for your kind message. Holmes passed into a peaceful sleep and our vet couldn't have been better. I'll keep Nigel in my thoughts and prayers--he and Holmes sound a lot alike, facing illnes with such courage. Take care.

How's Nigel doing? He's been having trouble eating? I hope he is making a turnaround as I type this! Keep me posted, please. I know how difficult it is to care for a kitty with medical issues, and I know how devoted you are to giving Nigel the best.

Hi Shiela--Spike is very clingy. I wake up to find him sleeping on my chest with his head nestled on my shoulder. He often sleeps during the day in spots where he used to cuddle with Holmes, as if he's waiting for him to come back. Arthur, surprisingly, is quite subdued. He and Holmes were never fast friends, but Arthur went through a day about a week after Holmes was gone when he didn't eat. We suspected a hairball, but the vet said there wasn't one, and the stool sample didn't reveal any parasites. We can only conclude he was grieving in his own way. Very strange. With all the med. care we gave Holmes, I still find myself thinking 'Is tonight pill night?' or 'Maybe he needs a snack.' Then I realize I don't have to jump up anymore. Such a constant routine, and now there's nothing. But I will say the other two seem a little calmer, and they're not demanding food every hour because their brother got some. It's different ... sadder and different. You take care, and give Nigel a big pat for me.

Hi Shiela--what gives with all the snow you're getting? I'd like to see some. Yesterday was ten years since we lost Holmes' brother Moriarty to injection-site cancer, so we hauled out the photo albums to reconnect with our 'boys' again. Bathroom reno has been pushed to Thursday, which is okay, but that better be the last delay. Arthur and Spike seem to be trying to get along--occasional scraps and jousting for power, but they're also sleeping much closer together; interesting to see what terms they come to. Big cuddle to Nigel--keep me posted on how he's doing, and best of luck with your art show in April. How exciting! (I'll have some excitement of my own soon as well ... more to come).

Hello Shiela - no, it wasn't my photo on 'tough' today but I went there a couple of years ago.
Perhaps the zimmer was mine, though.

Oh, Shiela, I feel for you. It's so hard to watch our dear companions as they face their final days with us, and yes, it is draining emotionally. You'll do exactly the right thing, at the right time. I'm sure Nigel will let you know when he's had enough and his passing over the bridge will be gentle. I'm sending you my warmest thoughts, and knowing my little Holmes, with his big heart, he'll be on the other side to greet Nigel when he arrives. May Nigel's time with you be peaceful and full of love.

I put 3 photos of May Bushes (2 different flowers & a hedge) in my gallery if you want to see them a bit bigger than the jigsaw was, so you can see the detail.

Arthur sends his heartfelt thank you for the birthday wishes! He's happily ensconced in a wicker basket in my office, cleaning himself while the contractors try to map out the floor tiles for the bathroom ... and wouldn't you know, I've come down with a boomer of a cold? Just looking out the window at the rain isn't helping much either!

Oh, Shiela, I just read your sad message. We'd been cooped up painting bathrooms all weekend so I'm just checking mail now. I know how very much you loved Nigel and that you were a doting mom to him. How difficult to watch him losing weight and to feel powerless to help him. I was certain Nigel would let you know when it was time for him to make his journey and I think he gave you a clear sign. Never an easy decision, and always painful in the days leading up to the inevitable but despite your aching heart, I know you're at peace knowing that Nigel won't suffer. My heartfelt sympathy to you, Shiela, and I'll keep you in my thoughts. You'll hear Nigel's gentle paws for quite awhile, I'm sure. Take care, my friend.
