Hope all goes well with the thyroidectomy! I had a partial about 38 years ago this month. So far, it just means blood tests every 6 months or so to check my levels - and forever taking replacement. If you'll have the full removal, I don't suppose you'll need to have blood tests as frequently.

From what I've heard, HRT, at least in the US, seems to refer to female hormones given after hysterectomy or to lessen hot flashes, etc., after menopause. You're right that you'll need to take thyroxin after a partial or complete thyroidectomy. I have never received too much thyroxin, so no easy weight loss here.

My surgery was done SOOO long ago that patients weren't as knowledgeable about procedures and follow-up as they are now. Of course, it was done prior to internet access, and in my small town, the library was of no help. I think the doctor's reaction was that one should not worry about it or even think about it and leave everything to the doctor. I do remember that there was some thought that the vocal chords might possibly be affected.

After surgery the nurses told me not to move my neck, resulting in an EXTREMELY stiff and sore neck for a few days. I also experienced some dryness/soreness in my throat that were helped by sucking on Sucrets/mouth lozenges. There was no longer a dressing on my neck after I left the hospital, so I had a visible red scar on my neck, which drew some attention when I went to church that first week. Unfortunately, that's about all I remember. Wishing you lots of good luck and hopes that it will cause an improvement to your over-all health. Sudoku Hugs!

Oh Lizzie - I hope Gizzie is OK - you must keep me posted as I am quite worried. I found your sweet note last evening...darn you woman...the waterworks (tears) started AGAIN!
It was so wonderful having time with you and Gizzie and I'm so grateful you were able to work out coming to Sydney. I will remember this trip with such joy and affection.

Good Evening (here), Liz!

Was just reading on page 9 of SA9A and noticed your comment about being emotional. I can certainly relate - both from my partial thyroidectomy years ago and my knee replacement surgery last month. It goes with the territory - major invasion into your body, crazy chemicals to help us sleep through the surgery. My doctor's nurse in a pre-surgery seminar even warned us about it. It's not depression - it's just that our bodies are trying to recover and get back to normal, but know that they were treated in a way other than we normally treat them. I find myself being crazily cranky and complaining some of the time or nearly in tears or in tears for reasons I don't understand. I just try to warn friends and family that I don't really have control over my emotions right now, but one day I will. Good luck! It will happen before you know it and you'll wonder why you were ever concerned. Healing vibes and prayers being sent your way! If you find you want to complain to someone about anything, just send me a PM. I'll totally understand and not tell a soul about it! Get better SOON!
