Today, Bean and I went to see The Painted Veil, based on a novel by W. Somerset Maugham.
To start with, I didn't love the characters of the estranged couple but they were well portrayed by Naomie Watts and Edward Norton. As the movie went on, one felt sympathy for them both.
A cameo role by Dianna Rigg was wonderful to see.
Set in the 20's in China during a period of turbulent anti-British sentiment.
The cinematography was amazing and showed China in dazzling light.

Truly Madly Deeply has GOT to be right up there with the greats...the great AR himself. It may not be a kiss, but his tortured longing (as mentioned before) in Sense and Sensibility wows me everytime!!!

Pierce and Renee burned up the screen, didn't they? My nearly 60-y-o cousin (biggest videophile I know) e-mailed me straight away with instructions to see TCA ASAP. "It's a GROWNUP love story!" She was right.

Loved all of Renee's costumes in that movie. In my next life, I want the body that can wear those clothes.

Why wait until then Terry - the next life, that is....get that black look-alike number NOW woman and steam up the bedroom!!! Who cares if your arse hangs down 6 inches lower than Renee's - it's how you swing it!

Did anyone see Memoirs of a Geisha? (Not as good as the book but) The last scene in that was so wonderful... sometimes less is more...

Although dinner table passion looks rather appetising even at breakfast...

Saw Married Life, lovely production, well acted but didn't set my pulse aracin'. David Wenham speaks with an execrable accent, but mercifully has only a few lines.
Also saw The Savages, brilliant...very well acted, has something to say and does it very well. Laura Linney and PSH are marvellous.

Now I've had time to relect I think I was a tad harsh on ML. Chris Cooper put in a wonderful nuanced performance and it was a savage indictment of one (?)form of marriage...

Hey bertie - I did see MOAG and I do remember the last scene but I also remember that the film irritated me! I just wish they had subtitled some the text instead of the Japanese speaking almost garbled english - but then that's me...

Mary - what accent was Wenham using? I couldn't for the life of me work it out! But I loved the movie! PB really surprised me - he was good! as was CC. I wonder if it's a play? - it would work well...

also saw 'and when did you last see your father', true story based on Blake someoneorother's life. Beautiful movie, beautifully filmed and even beautifully acted. Don't think this will do particularly well at the BO as it is so understated in its subject matter, but I sobbed all the way out of the cinema, out thru the foyer, down the street, in the car...I was in a very sombre mood, which not even 4 different desserts could lift...sob.

Billy, DW's accent will remain unattributed and mercifully never resurface...

Taken - after stuffing my face with a felafel wrap and rushing to see this film that had been touted as a similar "Bourne" offering - why oh why do I get sucked in like that and get indigestion to boot??? It was nowhere near as slick or as intelligent and poor Liam looked totally out of place and bewildered...but then that's only in my opinion...the felafel was beaut.

Saw Vantage Point, the flick about a Presidential assassination told from several POV. Was interesting at first as each retelling revealed more of the complex story, but then degenerated into a totally ridiculous car chase. They managed to avoid offending anyone by making the bad guys an international bunch of terrorists, but most of the characters were clichéd and the Yanks saved everybody and all the bad guys got shot.

Agreed, Mary. Particularly the Forest Whitaker/little girl subplot was contrived and got irritating. But I do love watching FW and Dennis Quaid doing pretty much anything, and self-doubt is one of DQ's best sides. SPOILER Then that gratuitous scene with the president at the end. Aack.

For a much more fun movie about use of doubles for presidents, see Dave with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. Sweet fable of a story with wicked notion that any good accountant with access to the fed. budget and a few hours could fund programs for children by trimming just obvious pork.

Saw Dave years ago. I could watch KK in ANYTHING!!!!

Saw Persepolis, an animated autobiography of a woman from Iran. I liked it a lot, the animation was inventive and allowed her more freedom to express herself than a conventional telling. It was also an interesting history lesson about Iran's recent past and an eye-opener as to how real people actually live in Iran, as opposed to stereotypes. Well worth seeing.

Me either, Angie. At least nothing worth recollecting. Been rewatching fave chick flicks. A Walk in the Clouds was the most recent. Keanu Reeves was adorable. The boy does have chops IMHO. Of course, his exotic good looks make it hard for me not to enjoy watching him. BTW, Angie, just got a three-fer at Target: A Walk in the Clouds, One Fine Day, and The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Dirt cheap. I'd have paid the price just to watch Jeanine Garafolo (sp). I just love her.

Never mind, Angie, I didn't see a grown-up movie for years when my kids were little.
Saw In Bruges, a black comedy about gangsters and hit men. There is graphic violence and more naughty words than nice ones, (1.18 F words per minute according to IMDB) but I really enjoyed it. The three actors Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes were excellent, the script was great and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Don't know about JG recently. Would have to look it up on imdb, which I'll do b/c want to find the name of the other great chick flick she made about a senator's aide who goes to Ireland to find his Kennedy roots, and finds a village full of wonderful people who change her life instead.

The Fall! Two big thumbs up. The little girl was amazing. Forgot about that earlier.

Hubby and I just back from the movies this afternoon, we saw 'Eagle Eye', an action packed suspense movie.. we thought it was ok.

Whilst we were on holiday a couple of weeks ago, we saw the new Batman Movie, and the new Mummy Movie.
Batman was very good. HL did a good job as the joker.
Mummy, fun movie.

Hididdleeio...plane movies...yawn...yegads - had a total blank just then...ah yes...Iron Man - loved it - Robert Downey Jr was excellenté, didn't recognise jeff bridges at first - he played a great baddie, gwyneth was gorgeous - why doesn't she do more? or has she and I've just missed them?
The Baker (played by Damien Lewis)- so idiotic it was brill! Hitman turns baker in a welsh village...it works.
saw snippets of other films between snores...food was good though, nothing quite like chicken rendang and prawn sambal at 2am...

oh yeah - Jack and Jill vs. the World - crap.

Just rewatched The Holiday. Everyone is yummy in it, including Eli Wallach ("I haven't been busy since 1978.").

Mary, Janeane Garofalo has been working steadily, per imdb. Has two movies coming out in the next year. The chick flick I couldn't name was The Matchmaker, which makes sense given the central character is the village matchmaker -- a charming and unique character. Costarring hunk from Glasgow, Scotland, not hard to watch, either.
