Mystery SOLVED!!! The calf is purebred Red Angus!
Last winter I left the bull in with all the pregnant cows so he would have company. During the calving season, a purebred heifer aborted her calf at 2 in the morning. I was out in the pasture at the time and saw her abort. I sent IH to the State Diagnostic Lab with the fetus to find out what happened, and to make sure that there was no disease involved. There wasn't. It was just a congenital heart defect. A few days later I removed the bull from that pasture. She must have started in season immediately after aborting and he must have bred her in those few days. I had completely forgotten about that incident.
When I went out to the pasture to try and find the mother again, the momma ran up to the calf and started letting her nurse. I AM THRILLED!

OH, so glad that Surprise and mother are together. Glad the mystery is solved. YEP, most any animal that aborts a fetus goes back into season almost immediately. Nature does not waste any time!
I went back to bed, had a nice sleep and hubby was up before me today. That is marginally amazing I always get up first.
Coffee has been drank, flax seed muffin and banana has been eaten, time to get busy. I can do a couple of food things for this weekend. Back to back parties to attend and bring food means a LOT of cooking. Today it is prepare the veggies for the veggie and dip tray, and bake the apple crisp. I do think I am forgetting something I was to bring, must find that e-mail and look again.
See you all later today,
Hugs to all.

Hello, Friends! I only have a few minutes, then need to grab some lunch & take pain meds. (with food, only). Physical therapy is at 2:30 today & I'm still stiff from yesterday. We usually do Mon., Wed., Fri., but they didn't have any openings tomorrow.
Sending positive thoughts for all who can use them, including June's "friend" and Teresa's SIL and all others I've forgotten (CRAFT's disease here).
Did I read that June's Ken has a birthday coming soon? Happy Birthday, Ken! Wishing you a wonderful day and many more!

So nice to see you posting, MizT, though it sounds like a busy day ahead. Veggies, dip & apple crisp sound yummy! Hope you're feeling better!
Hooray, Heidi has solved the mystery of Surprise! Nice that Mama cow will nurse Surprise and save you the trouble of bottle feeding!
How are you doing with the moving-in, Vici? I hope all has gone well with no nicks to walls or furniture! Chocolate dipped biscotti - yummm!

The mechanic got my tractor running this morning. I immediately fed the cows, and did a couple of repair jobs requiring the front end loader. While working on the 3rd lifting job, one of the hydrolic hoses for the front end loader ruptured, and all the hydrolic fluid poured out. My tractor is down again. I've left a message for the mechanic.

Oh, dear, Heidi! Does your mechanic offer a guarantee? Or at least a holiday or frequent user discount? I hope your tractor can be repaired soon and without a major outlay of cash!

All it needs is a new hydrolic hose. That's a relatively easy fix for him. The fix that he completed this morning was replacing the starter. There's no connection to guarantee.

I would LOVE a frequent user discount. As it is, they do give me some discounts and charge bare minimum for labor. They know if they treat me well, I will continue buying my equipment from them.

Busy day today, and it's nice and cool to go with it. Temperatures have halved overnight and we are getting some much needed rain.
Great news about Surprise Heidi, not so great news about the tractor.

This is a first time mother. She decided to "hide" her calf while she ate. When I first found her, she felt like she already had a full belly., so there was no question of her being accepted by mom. It just made it difficult for me to ID mom.

She seems to be. I bought her at a Red Angus show and sale, so she's show trained and used to being handled. Because she's so gentle, she's showing her baby how to behave. I can walk right up to the calf and rub my hands all over her without her spooking. She'll be a good 'un.

Morning All.
Teresa came over last night, SIL is now breathing 90% by herself so they plan to bring her out of the induced coma over a few days as she has to cough up the tube that has been helping her breath. The doctors will know more once she comes around.
Hope everyone is well or improving.
Great news about the calf Heidi.

Wish us luck...we are braving the shopping centre for the last of the knick knackery needed for next week, then we will be done, bar the food shopping of course.
This year will be the same as every year. A cold meat and seafood buffet, with salads, a potato bake and roast sweet potatoes (oldest daughter's request, she can't get enough of them!).
Dessert will be an extravaganza, as it always is. This year we have a chocolate fountain, which drips melted chocolate like a waterfall, in which you dip fruits, cake cubes etc, reminiscent of the chocolate fondue days. There will also be a chocolate mousse, a trifle (Liz, I need some advice here, yours was held as the example of how it is wanted) and brandy snaps with psht cream, a Christmas tradition in our house.
Open house, all welcome.

Gail, dinner sounds good. I wish I was close enough to come for dinner.
Good night everyone. I need all my energy for the hyper little lunatics I am going to be dealing with tomorrow. I am hoping that a bunch decide not to come for the last day of school. One more day and then two weeks off.

Finished! (except for the wrapping...)
The only things I need to buy now are some gift boxes for those who are getting vouchers this year, I like to put them into a box so the pressie at least looks bigger, and they can use the box for treasures, or as a gift box next year.

Tami lots of our schools have a snow day for the last day of term. It started snowing around 7pm yesterday and we have a good few inches now. The UK grinds to a halt in the smallest amount of snow nowadays.

Place is already set for you Brenda...always ♥
Our schools have officially finished today, although my last child at school finished a couple of weeks ago, it seems the senior years get off earlier as their exams finish.
For us, this is the end of the school year. Next year they 'go up' a year...all being well!
They now have their longest break, which lasts for about six weeks.

Well, the saga continues.....
I spoke to the tractor mechanic this morning. Apparently, it's not the easy fix I thought it was. He says every one of the hoses is different... Of course I didn't know WHICH hose it was (it's in a bundle of 4 hoses)... and it will have to be custom made. He'll be out sometime today to check it out.
I'm not asking for much! All I want is a working tractor!
