Morning all! A wet day today - a good thing as we had very little rain in May. Unfortunately it is forecast to last all week so I'm having to use my clothes dryer - don't like doing that!!!

June, when I first went onto SA4 it said there were 5318 comments. By the time I got to the last page, there were 5321 so I thought others were on with me, but it is more than 2 hours since you posted. Seems like your error messages were real! Perhaps it is all of the rain....

SA4! It's been a few days again since my last visit here. Thank goodness hubby and I are retired! There's just too much to do every day, so we certainly wouldn't be able to do it all AND go to work! I hope everyone is well and enjoying their day/night! I'll try to get back again during the day.

I am filling out an application to enter d2 into an eisteddfod later this year, and there are plans to get her singing in nursing homes etc in the mean time. A local group of girls sing (for fee/linked to a service group) and they might be getting d2 to sing some songs with them so she can get experience....

SUZY, Eistoddfod, an interesting word, and an interesting meaning. I wish daughter luck with her application. Must she audition as part of her application?
The singing at nursing homes sounds like a win win. she gets experience singing before an audience, and brings a bit of cheer into lives of the " grandmothers and grandfathers".
when my daughter was in day care, about 30 something years ago, thier director thought it would be good to take them to visit a nursing home on a regular basis. So they did several weeks of talking about how to behave, what they would see, and what to expect. All the residents were refered to as "grandmothers and grandfathers" with the explination that they had children and they had grandchildren woho could not be there all the time.
My daughter was one of the younger going on the trip, about 3 years old. They all, kindergardeners and day care children and teachers and aids, had to walk down a long hall, past patient rooms, to a day room where any who were able were gathered to meet and talk with the children. Teacher would count the children when they entered nursing home and again when they got to the day room. they were often one student short, and did not take them long to discover it was my daughter, T. They knew she came into the building with them, OK, someone go back and see where she is. they would find her, in a patient room with one of the sicker residents, quitely standing at bedside and holding hands with the resident.
The teachers and even the director tried talking to T about staying with the group and about not bothering the residents who were still in bed, but it did no good. Next visit, she would wander into a room again and be found standing holding a hand. At last the director got a voounteer to come on the trips, just to watch T ( I was in school at the time and could not go on these trips) If she wandered into a patient room, the volunteer just stood outside the room and kept her in sight.
The nursing home staff said T got reactions from some of the patients who had not communicated in any way for some time. Some would just reach and touch her arm and pat it, some would talk quitely with her.
NOW, HOW did I get there today?? Memories memories, where did they comr from?

BRENDA, we do not get any of the benefits from the government that you list. many private establishments give senior discounts, like on foods in resturants, there is a " senior coffee" at most fast food resturants, that is either free or drastically reduced. There is an association of retired persons (AARP) one can join to get a card that most hotels and other places honor for a discount. I am not sure about buses, we have no public transportation in our area, very rural, and not on any routes.

Really loved the story of of T tonight MizT, the innocence of children is something way too short these days. Takes you back to what is really important and that is caring. Take care...

I did not find a chiropractor, I left the office canceling the appointment, when they explained that I would need this series of X rays that my insurance would not pay for, before they could see me. NOPE, not me. Did not sound like the kind of doc I wanted to deal with, so I canceled the appointment , told them just what they DID NOT want to hear, that I could not afford all those X rays, and we left.
I have had chiropractic treatment on occasion over the last 30 something years, from 4 or 5 different doctors of chiropractic, and none of them required almost total body X rays before seeing me.
I hope I will know what to ask next time before I make an appointment.

It is annoying when these people want to rip you off MizT. Touch wood I have never had to use anyone like that. Even though we have a free health service here many people take out private health care insurance. To be honest we have it as a benefit through work, but doubt we will ever use it as they will not cover pre-existing conditions such as our friend arther, which would probably be the only thing I would need to see a Dr. with.

MizT, loved your nursing home story. I was just thinking about that the other day. My two older ones went to a nursery school that had an experimental branch that was held in a nursing home. They wanted to see how the residents improved being around the children. It really benefited both of them. The kids really enjoyed being around the grandmas and grandpas. One lady used to crochet the kids pins for every holiday: a pumpkin, turkey, santa, heart, shamrock and bunny. I saved them. I was thinking about her the other day wondering if she was still there. The special events and dinners were wonderful and, for some of the residents, it was the only time they saw visitors since nobody came to visit them from their families. Great memories!

Good luck to your d1 Suzy...and glad to know that the singing lady is still interested in coming, but I agree with the win win situation at the nursing homes. Good luck in all of her quest.

MAMA, I loved your "and if you are not (happy) Pretend"
Reminds me of a medical article I read some time back, I tried it and it works.
We smile when we are happy, but research had found, smiling can MAKE you happy! So, if things are not going great, like Mama said, PRETEND and paste on the biggest silliest grin you can, and your will get a lot happier and quickly too. LOTs easier than antidepressants or therapy.
they hypothosize (ok, fancy word for an educated guess) that when you smile, your brain is triggered to make more of the feel good chemicals. I never did see if they actually found an increased level of these in the research. I just know if I will smile, my day gets much brighter.
like the old old song, somethng about pack up your troubles in the old kit bag and smile smile smile!
Have you had your smile today??

Morning everyone!
Wonderful story about T MIzT! I think I will share it with d2 before she goes to the nursing homes so that she will get more from the experience than singing experience!!! A lesson in caring is far more valuabe.

Just noticed a typo in my post yesterday 'fee' should be 'free'. They perform up to 3 times a week without earning a penny... d2 will only go every now and then at the moment because she is too young for more.

Brenda/MizT - older Aussies receive more benefits than older people in America, but fewer than older people in the UK. Significantly reduced public transport costs is one, Rates reduction is another (like property tax?). There are others, and many of those are also available to people on other types of benefit (unemployment, disability, parenting....)

MizT, I agree about your chiropracter visit. It makes sense to have x-rays to prevent injury, a sensible precaution, but so many? Either they are paranoid or someone has sued them for damage done when xrays weren't taken..

I remember when I used to go in to see my mother in the nursing home. If I went alone she never recognised me, just looked vacantly around (she suffered from dementia). On the occasions I took my daughter in with me, my mother would watch her all the time and hold her hand. I don't know if she was remembering me as a child. they say that in dementia sufferers that their long term memory lasts longer than the present memories.

Hi Mary, we do have it good with our free National Health Service, though many people complain about the waiting lists etc. but I'm sure that they would complain a lot more if they had to pay for most of their treatment. they take it for granted that they can phone up the Dr. and get an appointment and if they need refering to a specialist that will happen with no charge.

I think the hardest part for me was when I had to go into the home she was in and tell her that my father had died. She wasn't to bad at that stage. I think I must have said to her that 'Dad has died' Just after I had told her one of the staff came into the room. My mum said to her 'My dad has died' instead of my husband. She really didn't know who he was, which was very sad as they were married for over 50 years and had never been apart for most of that time.
