Dear Martha,
Thanks for your good wishes for the recovery of my computer. It is a serious problem as the hard-drive had 'gone'. I am both apprehensive and hopeful about recovering lost material.

Martha, thanks for the info about your town's name. I love little bits of trivia like that, my brain is littered liberally with such.

I did try replying earlier this week, but it was one of many messages that dissapeared when I hit the send button. I did find a few photos and information about your area online, lovely area.

how large is the caldera from the old volcano? It sounds like a big one from what I read. I was surprised at the lushness, I think of all Oz being more arid and treeless. The gums, are they what we call sweet gum trees? Or similar? was it near you where there were "working ranch" vacations, and one of the gest entertainments was to replant trees in the national parks?

Martha, I am in the middle of the state, actually within 10 miles of a plaque saying this is the geographical center of Alabama. That is outside a town named Montevallo, it is a university town, albeit a small university. some buildings over 100 years old, which is old for this area, nothing much substantial was built here before that. Old buildings mixed with new, worth googling to take a look. University of Montevallo. that is the largest town in the general vicinity, it has a Main street and 4 traffic lights. Cars still pull nose in to parking places, not parrallel parking. Once there were shops catering to the students, now the malls and suburbs of Montgomery and birmingham are within driving distance, with freeways and people thinking less about driving for an hour to get to destinations.

Gum trees then are nothing like our sweet gum, which are in Maple family.

The caldera with it's mountain for a plug is interesting. One of the large ones is in our yellow stone national park in the south west USA. Lots of hot springs, geysers, and mud pots. volcano is really still active under there.

OK, falling asleep at keyboard, many typos and missspellings, to sleepy to check tonight.

Hello Martha - thank you for your visit. I haven't been on the site much since before Christmas as I was in NZ for two weeks with a daughter and her family, and have just had my other daughter, her husband and three grandaughters staying with me. I'm afraid I've got too used to being by myself so it was very quiet once they had gone.
I'm sure you enjoyed your son's visit very much too. At least they know that the door is always open for them!
Cheers
Anne

Hi Martha, I was sorry to hear about your eye problems. I have suffered with ulcers on my corneas for years. Apparently mine is caused by dry eyes and so long as I keep them lubricated I don't have any problems. Last year was the first time in about 6 years that I didn't need to visit the specialist. Good luck.

Hi Martha,
When we have been shaped and back on dial up I wait until after midnight when we have a greater allocation and more speed. Gotta love that speed!

Curious to know if that applies on normal dial up - can't really remember back that long ago.....oldtimers getting to me....

We are great Chaser fans and my son styles himself on them....I love the way they take the mickey out of one and all as well. I live in a VERY funny household.

I really enjoyed all our banter the other day...let me know if you ever want to meet in the chat room for a natter....there has been the odd cryptic comment about the number of pages we got up to the other day but I haven't tallied up our efforts!! It is good to see squirt posting. Cya.

Yes, I can't wait for it to be finished either. My son said that this new author is also supposed to finish the 2 "prequels" because Mr. Jordan had left such copious notes... He had known the end was coming and would even update his fans so as not to let them down. Me, I would have spent it all with family and friends, my biggest fans, rather than the entire world...

Would be good if we can meet up and maybe congregate in the chat room on Friday. Usually after my first post of the day [if I'm at home for the day] I check back regularly to see whats happening while I'm doing 'stuff'....has to be done at some stage!!!

Martha, I'm glad I was of some help, don't know how much, but anything is better than none at all. Having two girls going thru VCE this year, I can totally understand the frustration of trying to find help with "homework". In fact I think that perhaps I should sit for my VCE this year, after all the proof reading, the reading of their novels and texts, etc., to understand what they need help with, I may as well sit for the exam. LOL
Please pass on my best wishes to "squirt" and tell her to do the best she can, thats all we can ask of them.
OH and btw, if Squirt ever needs help, one of my daughters Chantel has actually signed up as a FM, so have her buzz Chantel, they maybe able to help each other out. If not in school work, perhaps in just some comic relief.

Martha,

Markwells Cafe and Bar sounds great. Should we set the meeting time for 12 to give us plenty of time before Sharlene has to go to pick up her kids from school?
Cynthia says she will come as well (maybe Broni can skip work that day?).

I'm looking forward to meeting you. Will Squirt be coming as well?

That spot is about 40 miles from where we live. It's one of my favorite trails.
But the Gila National Forest boundry is only about 2 miles from here.

Martha, I made a reservation for our lunch today. It looks like there could be 10 of us (so far). You and Squirt (if she's available), Broni, Cynthia, Sharlene and her youngest, Kerrie, Linda (from Kilcoy), Mary (from Manly) and me.
It should be fun.

Martha, thanks for dropping by with your good wishes. It means a lot. We're still dumbstruck at the roller coaster we've ridden this past week and a half but are supremely fortunate that all ended well. I'm leaving you with a bottle of Niagara ice wine to enjoy with others for dessert--raise a glass in honour of miracles!
